For starters (and this is a really important one!) - avoid testing on WiFi. WiFi speeds are limited and will never provide the most accurate results.
Under ideal conditions, 2.4GHz WiFi will support up to 400Mbps-650Mbps and although 5GHz WiFi will support up to 1300Mbps, the test will most likely be limited by interference (from other devices, thick walls, microwaves, congested channels, to name a few...)
The expected speeds for your multi-gigabit service are as follows:
- up to 3 Gbps with an Ethernet connection on a single device (with a 10 Gig port or adaptor) or above 1Gbps for multiple devices connected at the same time with an Ethernet cable
- Faster WiFi speeds than at present with WiFi-6 devices - the average is around 700-800Mbps but this depends on the user device and WiFi quality
How to run a speed test
To perform the most valid speed test we recommend the following:
- Connect your device to the router using a wired connection. Never test on Wi-Fi.
- Use a good quality cable, minimum Cat5e, but use ideally Cat6 and STP (Shielded Twisted Pair) to stop electrical interference. This is printed on the cable.
- Do not use an old computer, but a higher-performing up to date device. Using older devices can adversely affect performance.
- Reboot your device to ensure it is running the minimum software to run and do not open any applications other than a web browser. We recommend using the latest versions of Chrome, Internet Explorer or Firefox. Please ensure only one browser window is open and with no tabs.
- Ensure that no anti-virus scanner is active as this can significantly increase the load on your computer. But be sure to turn it back on afterwards as leaving your scanner off is a security hazard and it is not recommended.
- Ensure you are not running any ‘VPN’ (Virtual Private Network) or proxy type of application at the time of speed testing as this can severely hamper the results.
- Please ensure no other devices are connected, which will contend for the available bandwidth.
- Download the Speed Test App to your device and ensure the server selected is 'Community Fibre Limited (London)'
- Please note down your speed test results for both up and down speeds and compare them with the expected speeds for the service you are taking and take a screenshot.
- Perform three tests (at different times) and record all results. Ideally one in the morning, a second mid-day, and a third in the evening.
